Abuse Signs: 10 Early Warning Signs of Abusive Men
The American Psychological Association Task Force on Violence and Family has reported that "more than 4 million American women experience a serious assault by a partner each year." This disturbing statistic should be a wake up call for all women. Once a man begins to abuse a woman, it will continue to escalate and eventually a woman's life will be in danger. Abuse can take the form of verbal, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. In most cases, abuse does not occur at the beginning of a relationship; however, women should be aware of the many early abuse signs that indicate that the man they are dating may be abusive as these signs can often be identified after only a few dates.
1. Negative Views About Women: His discussions about his previous relationships involve using derogatory terms and totally blaming the women for the break up. He may also talk negatively about women in general.

Jealousy: He may get upset about the amount of time a woman spends with friends, coworkers, and family, including her own children. He may say his jealousy is a sign of love. He may also accuse a woman of flirting and dressing provocatively to attract men.
3. Possessiveness: Being possessive is a sign he wants to control every aspect of her life. He may ridicule her friends and family, attempt to control her money, show up announced at work, check her caller ID, check her email, and call many times a day to see where she is and what she is doing.
4. Obsession with Pornography: If a man has a large stash of pornographic magazines and movies displaying violent sexual acts or he spends a lot of time on the internet watching porn, this may be an indication that he has violent sexual fantasies.
5. Emotional Abuse: This type of abuse includes name calling, belittling, insults, sulking, not talking, crying, yelling, and screaming. These are all acts of intimidation to exert control over a woman. A man who has sudden mood swings from happy, to anger, and to sadness, in a short time period, is another abuse indicator.
6. Ending Life: A man threatens to commit suicide if a woman tries to break up with him or threatens to kill a woman, her friends, or family.
7. Intoxicant Abuse: A man drinks heavily, uses drugs frequently, and berates a woman for not wanting to get drunk or high, He may also become more physically threatening during times of intoxication.
8. Social Isolation: He tries to cut the woman off from her friends, family, and coworkers. He will try to center all activities at home instead of going out. He may monitor all correspondence by phone and computer. He may take away her cell phone.
9. Blaming Others for his Problems: He tries to make himself a victim and avoids personal responsibility. He will even blame the woman.
10. Past Relationship Abuse: He may admit to hitting a woman in the past or one of his friends may say that he has hit a previous wife or girlfriend. If he admits to hitting a woman in the past and says he felt guilty about his actions, but never felt the need for counseling, it is a warning sign that he will hit a woman again.
Many women do not realize that these behaviors and actions are signs of a potential abuser. If you see these indicators in your boyfriend or husband, you may want to reassess your relationship and consider ending it before things get out of control and your life is in danger. True love is not supposed to hurt or create fear.
